Good evening,

I read about a yachtsman's flat competition compass in "Sea Kayaking" by
Derek c. Hutchinson. It is found on page 28. He describes it as, "The dial
is large and the luminous figures stand out against a black, green and red
background."

Anyone know what brand of compass he is speaking of and where it can be
found?

Regards,

Jim Fitzgerald

It sounds like a Suunto tactical compass used for dinghy racing. Flush mount, floating-card. The opposing red and green sectors are used to calculate tacking angles. I looked on the www.suunto.com/ page, but didn't see it there. Westmarine has a Ritchie tactical compass, albeit with a hemispherical rather than a flat card. It's similar to their kayaker model, in fact.
Will post if I succeed in finding the flat one.

It is a Suunto compass that he speaks of. Unfortunately they no longer make
that model. Current Design and P&H used to use them. They offered recesses
built into the decks for this model. It is a very nice compass. Perhaps CD
still has some in stock?

This does sound like a Suunto K-15 flush mount. As others stated, this
compass is no longer produced. Truly is a fine compass, great for night
paddling. Purchased the compass in 1992, since sold the kayak but kept the
compass. Due to it's low profile it must be mounted flat to the deck.
Kayaks with a compass recess at a angle would not work with the K-15. With
only about a 15 degree list the dial is in contact with the housing, this is
the main draw back with this unit. It's low profile and the other item's
Jim mentioned is why I really like this compass. At the time I purchased
the K-15 I think the coast was $120.00 US dollars. Not cheap but worth it.
Good luck with your search.
