DAVE--I think you are right, we do have a case of miscommunication here. I
didn't think you or Duane would be routinely hitting the VHF to warn ships
that you're crossing a lane. I agree that it is prudent to warn ships that
have strayed and are heading towards you, although I have not been in that
predicament.

I have used it to warn a commercial squid boat that was heading into the
harbor at full throttle, that I was dead ahead--All I could see was the
bottom of his bow and the bow wave. Fortunately he slowed down after I
called.

I also used the VHF to warn pleasure boats that were leaving a local
pleasure boat harbor that there was a party of 3 kayaks about a 1/4 mile
from the harbor entrance and that we were coming in. This happened on a day
where we had a sudden fog bank come up and visibility was about 50 feet.
