If you're looking for cheap(like free) inflatables, for paddle floats or
any other appropriate use try box wine bladders. They're super strong,
easy to inflate, and reflect light like a mirror. I store two uninflated
bladders inside of a produce net bag. When inflated they really clamp
on to a paddle. They're
also fun to drain........................ bob klemick

Well now, that depends on what they held when you
drained them. If they held wine, and you drained them
down your gullet rather than into the sea before
blowing them up to use as floats, you might not
succeed in the self-rescue, though I bet you'd have
fun trying!

I've made a couple of paddle floats from wine cask bladders. Sure they are
cheap and fun to drain, but:-
1. They are not particularly easy to inflate while you are swimming beside
your boat in cold water. The taps are not designed for this.
2. They are not as robust and puncture proof as a well made paddlefloat.
3. Even using two 4 litre cask bladders in one float, this arrangement does
not have as much floatation as the Mariner paddlefloat I now use.
A paddlefloat is only going to be used when a roll has failed, a wet exit
has occurred, and you are already cold, tired and battered by waves. Every
minute counts, and every advantage is needed. So, I reckon have a good float
if you're going to have one at all.
