I am a relatively new canoeist and have run into a problem gluing kneepads into my Royalex Mad River Explorer - any advice would be appreciated. I bought a couple pairs of minicell foam kneepads [Voyageur] that have self-adhesive sheets. Put them in last fall, no problem. This year, they started falling off when the canoe had been on the car for a few hours or few days. Voyageur said they had a bad batch of adhesive, replaced them. New ones did the same thing. Scraped the loose adhesive off, and glued them on with Mondo Bond. Everyone thought that should have done it, but they still pop off...not right away, but after the canoe [dark color] has been in the sun on the car. I figure the canoe and the pads are just shearing apart from thermal movement of the hull, but don't know what to do next... I have successfully glued in several D rings with Vynabond vinyl adhesive and they're solid, so I know that it's not just because I'm a doofus who can't prep the surface and put two pieces together. The glue - either the self adhesive or the Mondo Bond - mostly stays on the hull, and the pads that come off have no adhesive to speak of on them. Any ideas? Do I need to prep differently for Mondo Bond or something? Why wouldn't the Mondo Bond adhere to the pads, even though that's specifically recommended for them? Should I use Vynabond to glue these in, or some other adhesive? Does anyone know if Vynabond would work with the minicell pads? Also, I have a nice coating of adhesive residue on the hull now... any suggestions for removing this adhesive that wouldn't damage the Royalex? If you see kneepads bobbing down the Colorado like corks, they're probably mine....
