I know that there are a few PWers out there that have built or are
building Northbay/Northbay XLs. I have been considering building one for
some time, but I have concerns about cockpit size and fitting. I am not a
large person, but I seem to be much bigger than the prototypical
paddler. My question is, is there enough room inside a Northbay for
me? I am 6'2" _at_175lbs with a 36" inseam and size 12 feet. Does the XL
have much more room? I don't really need width, I would prefer the
20" beam. I need depth.

Any comments?

Thanks,
Daniel

The only problem seems to be your foot size- I am 6', 160 with a 36"
inseam as well- I am very pleased with a 9.5 shoe size in this boat. I
think that larger may prove difficult.

Just copied this off CLC's site:

"Though we have made both North Bays a bit larger than traditional
Greenland boats (to accommodate the "southern physique"), they are
low-volume boats and larger paddlers may not fit. The standard cockpit is
quite small at 24 inches long and 15 ½ inches wide (a larger
Chesapeake-style cockpit is a kit option at no extra cost)."

24 inches might be a bit tight for you, but the Chesapeake cockpit option
will fit your needs. I have a Chesapeake 18, and I can put 5 gallons of
water infront of my feet with my legs extended. Lots of room.

With all respect, the North Bay is a bit different than the 18. I put a
Romany cockpit opening on my boat (did a rubbing as a pattern), the
35.5" x 15.5" wide larger one, And have no problem getting my legs in by
length. However, due to the narrowness of the boat, the placement of
the foot pegs for a 36" inseam is in an area which will only house
smaller feet. I chose to block foam 4" from the front bulkhead to a
good bracing length (I can put about 5 teaspoons of water in front of my
feet and can't extend my legs) and have the maximum area for foot
placement- just enough for my 9.5.

Paul H., also on this list, is building a West River (also a nice
boat), which he chose after trying to fit feet in a North Bay at
Okumefest...

I think you should try the boat.

Then again, if you are building from plans, you can always modify.

I have another question then. Where and how would I try one? Are there
any owners or builders in the Seattle area? Will CLC be represented at the
PT symposium? I am looking to start building this fall.

If I am forced to build from modified plans, I will probably do it
completely from scratch.

Thanks,
Daniel

I don't know that CLC will be specifically represented at the PT
Symposium, but there will be several CLC builders at the West Coast Wood
Kayak Builder's Rendezvous in PT on August 19-20th.

Boat design is tricky--do you have a basic understanding of what you
will be designing for?

For those of us with larger feet (like mine) I'll bet that a modification of
the height of the foredeck of the NB 22 or 24 would be simple to do,
allowing very adequate foot rom. Either John Hunter or Chris Kulczinski of
CLC would probably be glad to tell you how to do it, either by e-mail or by
phone. The opening in the cockpit (that is, where the coaming goes) should
be large enough even for those with 36" inseam.

I would second the suggestion on building the West River 180. I just
finished building mine a few weeks ago and am very happy with its fit and
performance. The other day I took it on a 4 km crossing to an island on
Lesser Slave Lake in 40 kt winds.
