Per Wes Boyd's excellent advice, I decided that a kayak trailer was for me. Not having much of a place to store two 16'+ boats, I decided storing them protected on the trailer would be a good idea. I bought a Magneta Trailer (http://www.magnetatrailers.com/canoe.html). I purchased the UKT4 trailer with tongue and frame extension (to accomodate larger kayaks) and larger tires. The total price was $620 delivered. It arrived in five very large boxes (anywhere from 45 lbs. to just over 100 lbs. each). The total quoted weight was about 300 lbs., I believe. Having a convertible with a small trunk, it was a fun challenge getting these home to where I'd build the trailer. The instructions were chock full of spelling and grammatical errors, but were pretty easy to follow nonetheless. It took me about six or seven hours to assemble it. Some self-drilling, self-tapping screws were left out of the package but a trip to the hardware store fixed that. Also, the turn signal indicators from the lighting assembly wouldn't fit where they are supposed to on the frame; that's okay, however, because my lighting system is wired to flash the corresponding brake light on a turn. So, how well does it work? Quite well. It will hold four kayaks, feels very well constructed, and was, in my opinion, a pretty good deal for the money. I feel like it's definitely "over engineered" for the job of carrying four kayaks; the tires are nice and big and the axle is rated for 1,500 lbs. I see people carrying pretty large power boats on trailers with smaller axles and tires. If anyone has any questions about the trailer or if you'd like me to take some pictures of any parts of it with my digital camera, I can do that. I have a boat trailer that used to serve an 18 or so foot Boston Whaler, sitting in my back yard. Has anyone ever converted something like this into a kayak trailer? Plans or Pictures?
