Hi, 

Personally, I found that the retroreflective Scotchlite tape motorcycling
shops sell is excellent for visibility; I figure if it's good enough to
make my helmet stand out in pitch dark at 65+ mph, that's a reasonable
recommendation. 

I use a Werner carbon-fibre paddle, and will be putting loops of tape on
the shaft at regular intervals.
