Mark, I'm goig to have to challenge you on this one.  I doubt
very many folks could tell how strong a kayak is by looking at 
it.  I'm a structural engineer by training and can tell you
things are rarely what they appear to be.  Most would confuse
"stiff" with "strong", as you have confused big and heavy (in
cars) with strong [what would you rather be in in a 200 mph
crash - a 6000 lb SUV or a 2000 lb F1 racer?].   Poorly
constructed isn't always the same as weak.  When you throw in
the multitude of materials in use, the problem only gets more 
complicated.

Only destructive testing would be of value and it would be too 
costly.
