My engines seem to have lost their Boolean abilities and I'm
not coming up with much for S.F. Bay rental. Any tips on
where to rent a decent fiberglass boat? Sorry; I know this
is asked frequently.

In my search I found this amusing [unnamed] rental site.
After paying $42 per day for a boat, you might also want to
get the following:

             Personal Floatation Device

$6

                 Touring / Whitewater Paddle

$9

                   Farmer John Wetsuit

$11

                    Neoprene Booties

$5

                      Paddling Top

$6

                      Spray Skirt

$6

                      Paddle Float

$3

                       Bilge
Pump $3

Total:
$49

Hi,

I have rented twice from California Canoe & Kayak in Oakland, 510-893-7833.
MY rental was a fiberglass boat with a reasonable amount of equipment. I
don't remember the cost, but it was way below what you said. Of course, I
brought my own booties and i didn't use a wet suit. Everything else was
part of the rental.

Things may have changed but this was a good rental from my point of view.

ps BTW, if you can travel to Monetrey, do it. That was a Great rental
(twice!).

Other than the place in Oakland, I know there is one down in Monterey, but
that's of course a bit of a drive. OTOH, I think I'd rather paddle out of
the Monterey area than in SF Bay itself. . . but either would be great. I
can't remember the name of the place in Monterey, but as I recall they did
have a web site.

CCK (California Canoe and Kayak) is great place to rent with a good
selection of boats and most are only used for classes and rentals for one
season...so they should still be in pretty good shape. They are the major
retailer for the Bay area...so they can probably accommodate a special
request or at least provide a similar boat to the type you paddle or the
type of trip. They price by the day and then discount for extended rentals.
They are located in the Oakland Harbor area so either be prepared to paddle
some fairly uninspiring waters or transport the boat to better paddling
areas on the bay.

Sea Trek is another Bay area outfitter located in Sausalito. They don't
have quite the same selection of rentals but they have a great location if
you don't want to transport the boat. They have a great launch site in
protected waters not too far from the harbor entrance from there it's a
great paddle across Raccoon Straits to Paradise Cove or if you plan the
tides right not to far to head out the Gate and over to the beaches in
Marin. If you're going out the gate you may not want to mention it when
you're renting.

Other great places to paddle and play...

Kayak Connection has two locations one in Santa Cruz and one at Elkhorn
Slough they are really great people and can help you plan any kind of trip
you're up for.

Monterey...the major rental source their is Monterey Kayaks...mostly SOTs.

Have fun.

On the coast, north to south, there are rentals in Half Moon Bay, Santa
Cruz, Moss Landing (Elkhorn Slough, can't paddle there without whacking a
sea otter on the head), and Monterey. That's off the top of my head.

Check out the BASK home page for locations and contact info;
