If I'm not mistaken, I believe the Houston Canoe Club also leads ww trips
out to the rivers in the Texas Hillcountry. That's the place to go for
clear rivers and streams. Also, along with the ACA, they sponsor a
*huge* paddlesport event north of Houston each fall (Oct 6-8) this year.
I *strongly* recommend that event. Great place for all kinds of clinics
and chance to try out a multitude of boats as weall as a great opportunity
to meet other paddlers. All the info should be on their website. Lot of
really good people connected with the Houston Canoe Club :-)

Cheers,

Jackie

Awww... y'all are nothing but a bunch of tenderfoots :-)

Actually, you are correct. There is no good kayaking in Texas.
Absolutely none. Terrible place to live and work and especially
play. So you would definitely not want to live there. While I'm at it,
I'd like to say the same about Florida (how's that, Dana? ;-)

Cheers,

Yup, you are 125% correct. Florida ranks right up there, and no offense,
probally rates as a worse place than Tx to live / play / work. Heck, I
believe that even the mosquitos here are bigger and more vicious than Tx. So,
all you people who are thinking about moving here or Tx, think Seattle, or
Maine, or somewhere fun!!

Hey! Now wait just a dang minute, there! Texas mosquitos are so big,
just one requires an entire rudder for a perch! And they are so vicious,
they eat Power Bars and can suck all the blood out of a Texas longhorn in
two minutes flat! We even rope 'em and use 'em as kites to propel our kayaks
through the water! :-p

PLEASE! Tell everyone this; maybe they'll move away or just visit the
Mouse.

As it is, out-of-towners have finally discovered our little town and are
buying beachfront to build condos.

But escape is just a paddle away. (Gotta love NE Fla!)

While we're at it, Alaskan mosquitoes and water are the worst. The water
is clouded with glacial silt and is cold enough to kill you in 20
minutes. Two mosquitoes once carried me away into the woods. They were
arguing whether to eat me on the spot or to carry me farther into the
woods before the BIG mosquitoes stole me from them, and I escaped during
their argument.

hmmm.... too bad you sold the sailboards. I'm not a wind surfer but learned
while watching a national sports channel that wind surfers consider Corpus
Christi to be the wind surfing capital of the world (due to year-long windy
conditions). The speeds they were talking about was awesome 8-)

Easy drive from Katy to Corpus. But maybe that's still to far for you.
I put thousands of miles on my car traveling to the coast weekends and
holidays for sea kayaking. Would never have considered giving up my
boat because I didn't live bayside.

btw, there is always ice skating at the Galleria. Maybe you should try that.
It does involve scooting across H2O without a motor.

You guys don't know nuthin. New York water and skeeters are the worst. In
New York, if you dip your leg in the water and pull it out again. . . it
ain't there, 'cause the pollution done et it up. As fer skeeters, well,
ours have West Nile Virus. Now beat that!

Nah, NJ's skeeters are even worse (and I used to live in Florida...).
Nearly got to be the State bird.

Some years ago some workers at a shipyard in Cape May were working into the
evening on a boiler for a new steamboat. Dusk came, and so did the
skeeters. Swatting them wasn't doing any good so they ducked into the
boiler and pulled the cover plate over so the skeeters couldn't get in.
Peace at last.
But soon, they began hearing this funny skreeking noise. One lit up his
lantern and they all could see the skeeters drilling right through the iron.
One of the workers grabbed his hammer and beat a skeeter's schnozz against
the plate like bending a nail. Soon all the other workers joined in.....
Unfortunately, after a while they had hammered in a tremendous number of
skeeters. Their combined wing power lifted up the boiler, workers and all,
and headed out over the Atlantic. But they soon were exhausted and the
boiler with its cargo wound up in the deep, and everyone drowned...

Them far ants shore kin bite, but I've seen Alaska Brown Bears in Alaska
swim up and board boats, and they bite harder, swim and run faster, and
carry twenty 4" long knives on their feet.

The closest I've come to meeting my maker was crossing Tustamena Lake on
the Kenai Peninsula. The lake is 25 miles long and about a mile wide,
right below a glacial icefield. When the weather changes, the cold air
dam breaks down and the cold wind comes off the glacier onto the lake,
whipping up 6' whitecaps in 15 minutes. We were in 5' swells with 6" of
freeboard - not a very comfortable ride, considering that the lake has a
reputation as a killer.

Thanks for the comment, Jackie. Dana, if I remember correctly, lives in the
northern area of the state near Jacksonville). My house in Miami is about 30
minutes from the southern entrance to Everglades National Park. I'm 20
blocks east of Krome Avenue. Fortunately, the sprawl stops there - nuttin'
but 'gators, skeeters, 'n other creepy crawlies. I did the swamp slog hiking
trip once - one girl felt a "water snake" slither past her leg. I saw one
sitting on a stump. Course, the birdlife is great.

And, yes, I was noticing similarities between Tex and Fla viz critters and
heat HOWEVER....we have ooodles of nice places to paddle: ocean, rivers,
lakes.
