Hello P´Wisenheimers!

I found a book about the first crossing of the Greenland Inland
Ice (by skis, it was 1888 or something) by F. Nansen (Norwegian, a
group of 4 Norwegians & 2 Lapps), which is illustrated. It was
translated into English first during the1890´s, this is a 1906
edition. Price was something around USD 50!

Nice reading, really, though Mr. Nansen is not really politically
correct towards the Lapps & the Aboriginals. After the crossing
they stayed through the winter months at the western coast, and,
among other things, learned kayaking. Drawn and engraved
illustrations after the photographs are quite nice :-)

Anyone else familiar with the book? I wonder if there are present,
new editions...

I have a 1895 and a 1934 edition but don't know of a newer one. there are
several others by or about him
FARTHEST NORTH: BEING THE RECORD OF A VOYAGE OF EXPLORATION... 1893-96.,
Hunting and Adventure in the Arctic , THROUGH SIBERIA. The Land of the
future, IN NORTHERN MISTS; ARCTIC EXPLORATION IN EARLY TIMES, Russia &
Peace, JOURNEY ACROSS THE INLAND ICE OF GREENLAND FROM EAST TO WEST, Norway
and the Union with Sweden, THE SEA-ROUTE TO SIBERIA are a few of them. He
did get around.

Ari,

I searched Advanced Book Exchange (http://www.abebooks.com/) and found 29
listings of several books by Fridtjof Nansen including a few listings of The
First Crossing Of Greenland. All were quite expensive. One of the listings
was at US $195.00! Nansen's works seem to be more for collectors of rare
books.

I must have read an edition from the '30s which is in the Chicago Public Library
a few years ago. This is really a wonderful book.
