Good evening, I wanted to share my first rolling success with Paddle Wise. I have been studying a web site on rolling: Kayak Rolling Primer http://www.bristol.digitalcity.org/org/sports/canoe/kayakrol/rolling.htm I have a P&H Capella and a Werner carbon fiber paddle. I worked on the exercises suggested by the Kayak Rolling Primer. My wife and I went to practice this afternoon in the pool. I thought I would try a Pawlata roll after completing another set of the exercises. To my surprise, I rolled! I proceeded to roll five times without fail! The Kayak Rolling Primer is an excellent site that most of you may already know about. I give it two thumbs up! Congrats Jim, That site and the book "The Bombproof Roll And Beyond" are, IMHO the two best resources for rolling technique and exercises available. Roll until you get dizzy, then keep rolling until you are unable to roll anymore. Have fun!! Jed writes <Roll until you get dizzy, then keep rolling until you are unable to roll anymore. > This would be very bad practice for me. If I push any exercise too much, my muscles get weary and I start doing it wrong. Especially when learning a new technique, it works much better for me to do it once correctly, relfect on that for a few seconds or a few minutes, then do it a few times more - and then set it aside. It's too easy to "learn" a technique incorrectly if I'm using exhausted muscles. Once it's learned, though, I agree with everyone who's written that rolls and other things must be mastered "in conditions" - and that includes the condition of fatigue. Easy Does It - that makes it easy. Combat roll practice! Thats one of the reasons I like running rivers. White Water gives you such a great place to practice your combat (aka, 'in condition') rolls 8) The next best place I'm finding is in surf 8) Any paddle-wisers in Oregon wanna go play in the surf? I'll be out a couple more times this summer. I'd be fairly easy to find too! Just look for the blue-green mazda truck with 3 bars and on the back canopy window: a paddlewise sticker (special thanks to Jim Tynan!) right over my WEMT sticker and across from the rainbow flag. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- snark_at_tulgey.org aka Glen Acord http://www.tulgey.org/~snark if ($snark eq "boojum") {vanish("softly","suddenly")} *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - All postings copyright the author and not to be reproduced/forwarded outside PaddleWise without author's permission Submissions: PaddleWise_at_PaddleWise.net Subscriptions: PaddleWise-request_at_PaddleWise.net Website: http://www.paddlewise.net/ ***************************************************************************
