Here (some 80 miles south of Melissa's Grays Bay), the soft, grey tones of winter stillness are punctuated by the "mack, mack" of solicitous duck hunters and the scrawking of geese. Lone winter paddling is one of my favorite pastimes. I find it stimulates my powers of observation -- it makes for a more intense experience. Wes' writing captures that feeling as well as any I have read.
