Hey all,

I guess it is about time to start this thread. I'm sure it will
consist of mostly lack of watersports coverage for those of us in the
US without access to Canadian TV. What is the word on the streets?
Think we'll get any NBC coverage? Anyone out there in Sydney? What's
the gossip there?

Let the thread begin!

Check out the www.nbclympics.com site. There is a nice section covering
the Canoe/Kayak events with a real nice store about Scott Shipley. It also
has a complete schedule of programs on NBC, CNBC, and MSNBC.
Unfortunately, the schedule doesn't seem to have the ability to search for
a particular event. You've got to check each day one, by one. It looks
like there are canoeing events scheduled for th Day 3,4,5, and Day 12.

For those that didn't have any luck with that URL, try:

Well, my sport (whitewater slalom) is in the games, albeit with a greatly
reduced field from 1992. Back then, each country could send 3 boats
in each of the 4 recognized classes. Now, each country had to qualify
for a greatly reduced number of slots, with the result being that many
paddlers completely capable of medaling aren't even there. The US,
for example, has 4 boats competing: one each in K-1W, C-1, K-1, and C-2.
To make matters worse, they (the IOC) has instituted a "qualifier" race --
which, in the case of the C-2's, reduces the field from a whopping 10
to a tiny 8. Yep...guess those two other boats weren't "qualified"
to be there even though they earned the spots in competition at
the World Championships last year. I guess having an extra day
of racing in order to ring the cash registers really *is* more
important than having as many athletes as possible face off
head-to-head for medals.

Cynicism aside, the US has excellent chances in all four classes...

In K-1W, Rebecca (Bennett) Giddens blew away the field at US Nationals
last month, and was only 7% of Scott Shipley's time -- and Scott ain't
slow. She won a World Cup race earlier this year and may be peaking
at just the right time.

In K-1, there's 3-time World Cup Champion Scott Shipley -- who has
focused on this competition almost to the exclusion of everything
else this year. Scott is fully capable of winning any race he enters.

In C-1, there's veteran Davey Hearn. Yeah, he's getting older (aren't
we all?) but it would be a mistake to count him out. After all,
he was "too old" when he won his 3rd World Championship in 1995.

In C-2, there's veteran and former World Champion Lecky Haller and
his partner Matt Taylor. If the water's high and the course is
hard, their combination of power and reach will be hard to beat.

Actually you can whittle it down to a set event:

<http://www.nbcolympics.com/results/oly/ck/index.html>

This shows whitewater on days 2,3,4,5, at 1:30 pm Sydney time. Days 11 and 12 have flatwater at 8:30 am. Days 13,14,15, and 16 have flatwater at 9:00 am.

>From the top of the TV schedule select the Event schedule and results, then select the sport of your choice for individual schedules.

I watched most of the opening ceremony last night. Did anyone notice how
many canoe/kayakers there were as flag holders? I counted at least four.

I wasn't keeping count, but there were way more than that -- I think close
to a dozen.

Which is about the most coverage of canoeing and kayaking that we'll see on
NBC broadcast. Maybe a little more on cable, but if you live out in the
country and don't have cable, oh well.

But then I don't care much for TV anyway, and not enough to invest in a
satellite dish.

NPR had a rather nice story of him and his practice on the Potomac- 2x a
day, 5 reps of 2x around the course for the past 20 years, quite a
regime. Takes breaks with trips to the Gauley and Upper Yough.
Sounded like a interesting guy, also an interesting diversion that
slalom. I also like slalom boats-good excuse to build a fleet-hmmmm....

I have looked around for any WEB sites that are providing on-time
video coverage. I have not been able to find one. With digital cameras,
it should be easy for an overseas WEB site to smuggle and send out video.

Our local paper reported on Thursday that the Olympic committee have cracked
down on sites that have the word Olympics in them to protect the official
site, and there can be no on-line broadcasts. NBC paid $US705 million for
the broadcast rights, and the committee says that those rights must be
protected.

TV or nothing?

Also in the report, work has begun on the web site for the Winter Games in
Salt Lake City, but at this stage there is no move to allow for video
coverage over the net.

Start lobbying!

Of course, the Canadians only paid something like $85US million for
the rights to broadcast everything un-edited. I've started recording
them so I can skip the commercials every ten minutes as well as the
little jerky-cam bios we kept getting treated to. I think this week
is going to be one long Hamm brothers fest. They seem like the feel
good story - this years "Strug Story".

For those of you not in the US, feel glad you don't have to put up
with American-style advertising (every 10 to 15 minutes, regardless
of what is happening). Unless your country has already adopted this
that is...

Had a good paddle today ahead of Hurricane Gordon, wind was 10-15, dark
skys, light rain and 2ft swells except for the navy vessels wake which were
3-3 1/2ft. Four paddlers showed up at Fort Clinch, Fla. and decided to go
for it, before the storm knowing it could be rough coming back. Crossed
over the 1/2 mile inlet to Cumberland Island and saw 12 of the wild horses
grazing on shore, paddled 4 1/2 miles to the ice house dock and ate lunch
in the boat house shelter and did a quick tour of the ruins and saw three
more horses and five wild turkey and one armadillo. Put the kayaks back in
the water with a slight drizzle and had a easy paddle back in calm water
crossing the inlet with little current. And of course ate at Sonys BBQ on
the way home.

Even if you had a dish, you would not get any more coverage -- unless you have a

Watched the Mens and Women's triathalon and that was great. Great win by the
Canadian male. I have seen pictures of the white water course and it looks
very impressive. I believe after the olympics you take your canoe there, pay
your money and go water water kayaking on the circuit. One of our club sea
kayakers is an offical at the Slalom event.
