Does anyone have suggestions re. voice and email communication on a paddle expedition out of range of the normal cell phone systems? I'll not be in need, (hopefully), of emergency communication but would like to be able to send daily trip reports, make logistical connections and call my wife occasionally for encouragement and reassurance. And... I'd like to do it cheaply. I have seen an email/satellite relay device used by a paddler in NWT in 99.(Was told that it cost ~$900.) I have also heard that the etrex GPS has an add-on feature similar to this. Again...would suggest that you ask at sci.geo.satellite-nav , as the tech-heads there will set you on the right path, quick! You might also consider one of the inmarsat systems (satellite phone)..pretty pricey though. There is some info on them at http://www.globalphone.net/cgi-bin/index.pl?rent=Action BTW.. where are you planning to paddle? *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - All postings copyright the author and not to be reproduced/forwarded outside PaddleWise without author's permission Submissions: PaddleWise_at_PaddleWise.net Subscriptions: PaddleWise-request_at_PaddleWise.net Website: http://www.paddlewise.net/ ***************************************************************************
