[Paddlewise] Loading a Pamlico/Loon 16 or similar

I'm really excited about an upcoming trip. Five of us (including our own
P'wiser Luke Hoffman) are going to do 5 days on the Suwanee River, starting
on November 5.

I'm going to take my Wilderness Systems Pamlico (14'6") which I call my
"canoe" because it has ample storage space. can view on wildernesssytems.com

I have plenty of dry bags, but I was wondering if anyone on the list has
experience in packing gear in these boats with 7-foot cockpits. In the case
of an unfortunate tip (heaven forbid!) what/how could I make sure the the
gear remains inside?

I'll have the front seat "slid" to the center which will leave the rear seat
available for storage. I have flotation bags (but not the kind that you can
put gear in). Has anyone come up with a webbing/bungee system to keep the
stuff in?

It's one big open hatch - without a cover, though I do have the super duper
($150!) deluxe (3 holes for solo or double paddlers) sprayskirt in the only
available color: black (great for visitibility - NOT!).

The boat has a pretty low freeboard, especially when loaded, so I'm reluctant
to drill holes in the coaming area, but....

I'm used to loading canoes and putting heavy-duty bungees around the thwarts
or shoving stuff inside kayak hatches. thank you...
