Gypsykayak_at_aol.com >Hmmm....maybe we could have an international Paddlewise Trash Collection Day. A week ago was "Clean up the World Day". Nine of us paddled over to meet another 3 and cleanup the Quail Island beach we do each year. By the time we got there the other 3 had done the long section leaving one little bay (about 20 yards long) where all the trash had accumulated. A fast job as the tide was coming in and the little bay was separated from our kayaks by a rock bluff (surf on to the stoney beach - seemed preferable to land on the sheltered part of the bigger beach). Round the island for lunch in the sun and dumping the 20 bags of rubbish, 30 foot of hose pipe, washing machine agitator (fits neatly over a kayak bow), tennis balls etc. for DoC to collect. Then home with a rising sea on the fore quarter. One new paddler experiencing the fact that the sea is not always flat - they've got to start somewhere. The rain started as we drove up the driveway at home. So, there are people out there collecting rubbish. We usually do on river trips too.
