I have used the backpacker oven for years. I don't find the oven that great, when you bake cakes or cinnamon rolls the bottom often gets over done and the top remain soft or doughy. The temperature gauge on the top never has worked. But on the other side it is great for baking small roasts, etc.

I did have an optimus oven before, it looks something like a bundt pan and baked things evenly on the top and bottom. I would probably still be using it if I hadn't have lost it.

Speaking of cooking, don't do what a friend of mine did about 15 years ago.
This had absolutely nothing to do with Kayaking, but while camping locally
(very heavily, with cots, coolers, and a truck load of gear) he proceeded to
have a few too many drinks (for medicinal purposes only, he assures me) and
decided that the stew he was cooking wasn't thick enough. Having nothing
"typical" to thicken it with, he scooped up a handful of dirt, stirred it in
with the stew, cooked it for another 5 minutes and proceeded to eat a bowl
full. The rest of us, of course, obstained. To this day, he swears that it
was good and that he suffered no ill effects from it. However......, to
this day, he's also lived almost completely off of twinkies and ho-hos on
other camping weekends. A camping weekend hasn't gone by since, without one
of our little group making a "Rob's famous stew" comment!

Had another guy who came out of his mothers womb with a Marine Corps tattoo
and wearing BDUs! He liked to go camping with us and practice his "Survival
School" training. He ate some gross stuff. I don't know how much of it was
really from Survival School and how much of it was just his warped brain,
but it sure went a long way to making the rest of us sick at our stomaches
everytime he came along! He eventually got booted out of the Corps....I
wonder why?
