Visiting folk in Victoria later this month. If the weather
ain't too miserable I'll wet my boat. Any recommendations
for a 2-3 day trip for an intermediate, well equipped (GPS,
VHF, VCR) paddler? I would also entertain going plush and
staying at lodge.

Thanks

Consider using Wallace Island Marine Park as a base. Only about 1.5 miles from
launch at Southey Point/end of Arbutus Road (on the north end of Saltspring
Island, perversely). This crossing could be gnarly in strong N or S wind, but
is relatively protected. From WIMP, there are several day trips possible.
And, if windbound, there is hiking to do on the island, which has some
interesting history, and is very pretty. Most of Wallace is owned by BC Parks,
but some 11 acres are private. There is a $5/night fee. Details in Mary Ann
Snowden's "Island Paddling," 2nd Ed., Orca Book Publishers, ISBN 1-55143-065-7
Orca has PO Box 468 in Custer, WA 98240-0468

My SO and I spent four nights there a month ago, and had the CG to ourselves,
midweek. In summer, it is a madhouse, I gather.

If the weather craps out, there are many B and B's on Saltspring.

Saltspring and Wallace are among the driest of the Gulf Islands, being firmly
in the rain shadow of Vancouver Island, but I have no experience with Oct and
Nov. I'd guess wind would be the concern, in any event, inasmuch as the
channels there run N and S, and as systems work through there would be strong
breezes, approaching gales at times.

I've thought about paddling there in the fall. Check out Snowden's book. She
has a lot of detail about weather, etc.

Things have changed since you were there last, Kirby. Better redo those maps.

There is a designated CG on the N end at Chivers Point. Read Snowden's guide
book, and if reading does not convince you, check out the photos on page 112 of
campers at Chivers. There is also a sanctioned CG at Cabin Bay, although sans
pit toilet.
