December issue of Canoe and Kayak magazine, page 201 has what looks like a Struer boat, that used to be made in Denmark. i heard that a number of years ago the mold was sent to the USA and boats were being made here. It looks like someone is making them again. The size as my boat, 16' X 20.5". Anyone know how to get more information on the Struer like kayak? TIA,<<<< I don't know of any 16' Struer kayaks that weren't also 28" wide (Rob Roy) so I'll get out the old crystal ball. Okay, the ball says that if you measure your kayak you will find it is actually 17'1" or so long by 20.5" wide with the inside dimensions of the cockpit being 34" long by 14" wide. Although I haven't been able to find the Dec. issue of Canoe and Kayak (it's not at my local kayak dealer yet) to see the picture, my crystal ball thinks that you have a "Slender". This was a Flatwater Trainer/Light Touring kayak and I think there were several molds in the USA at one time. I think the Seattle Canoe Club on Green Lake once had one. A guy I knew in North Seattle during the early 80's built one out of a mold someone had back then. don't know if it was Seattle Canoe Club's mold (or even a legal mold). The earliest reference I have for the Slender is 1974 (Canoe magazine's first ever Buyer's Guide--1975--Dec. 74 issue--said 17'long by 20" wide) but it may be several years older than that. Jorgen Samson was the designer. The U.S. importer was KAYAK SPECIALTIES, P.O.Box 152, 4860 Riverside Rd., Buchanan, MI 49107 (616)695-9637. The address and phone number are probably out of date, if Kayak Specialties even still exists (last time they were listed in Canoe's Buyer's Guide was 1985).
