In my neck of the woods (lower Cheseapake Bay of Virginia) , I find and
carry home a lot of bouy's and floats that have been cut off of crab pots by
careless boaters who don't steer downwind of the float, and therefore, run
over the line and cut it loose from the pot. I don't throw them out,
though. A few I've recognized as belonging to friends and returned them. The
rest are hanging off of my shed or fence. It's actually quite colorful and
attractive if you are in to the "water theme". According to the law, you
have to return them to the owner, but how do you find the owner if the
numbers are worn off or otherwise illegible?????

I particularly like Kayaking after a good storm has past by. I've collected
numerous nice fishing rods (if only reels floated too!) , a few good
coolers, some PFDs (hey! they wouldn't have lost them if they had been
wearing them!), a knee board, a couple boogy boards, etc etc. Again, if they
are labeled with a phone number, they get returned, otherwise, I'm a hero
with my kids, nieces and nephews........ :-) That's all from just this
year - I just started Kayaking this past February!

Coincidentally, my wife and I were going to a high school football game
recently. She said that morning that she wished she had a nice cushioned
stadium seat to take with her. I was going "yakin" that morning, and told
her I'd get her one if I found a Super K-Mart out on the Bay. Didn't find a
Super-K or a Wal-Mart, but sure enough, I found a brand new seat cushion
just floatin on by. She was standing at the dock when I returned. The look
on her face when she saw the seat cushion strapped to my deck rigging was
priceless!!!!!!!

The strangest trash I came upon was when I was paddling the Intracoastal.
$1M houses on one side and the expensive ones on the other.

I came across a bunch of brand new soccer balls. There was one about every
100 yards or so. I colleted as many as I could, maybe 8 or 10, and had to
leave the others. I guess someone with more money than brains was practicing
kicking off their back yard.
