I want to go kayak camping over Thanksgiving somewhere on Long Island, preferably near the North Fork, but anywhere from Lloyd's Neck out to Greenport. Does anyone know campgrounds (public or private or otherwise) open at this time of year (or any time of year, for future reference)? Any help is much appreciated. --Jody Hotchkiss Darien, CT. *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s). I can't remember their names off hand, but could get them for you if you'd be interested in them. One is a short distance out of Riverhead on the northwestern end of the bay. The other is on the south side of the bay and central. I just remembered the name of that one. It's Cedar Point, and I believe it's a Suffolk County Park. I think the other is a Suffolk County park too. I understand there's no problem camping in them off season. I keep planning to go kayak camping in that area, but haven't yet gotten to it. Let us know of your experience. My Yellow Pages gives their name as Eastern Long Island Kamp Grounds and their phone number as 631-477-0022. Again, I don't know the off-season conditions, but there is camping at Smith Point Beach on the south shore. Smith Point is essentially between Moriches Bay and the Great South bay, both of which offer somewhat more "protected" paddling than the Sound. I have paddled a lot on Moriches Bay and the eastern end of the Great South Bay and would be happy to answer more specific questions. Since time is short, you can call me at work at 631-344-2378 or at home at 631-758-3284 with specific questions.
