Not that I've got a lot of experience with such things, but I've noticed the
same here with the barges on the upper/mid Hudson.  Kind of reminds me of my
first time in a touring kayak several years ago, at a local small boat demo
in a roped-off area just outside the shipping channel in the St. Lawrence
River.  It was a neat experience being that close - safely - to a big
freighter and knowing instinctively that I'd just float right over that two
or three-foot swell coming broadside.  It seemed pretty big to me at the
time, and I know I would have been very nervous at the time had I been in a
canoe.

Kind of "love at first swell" for me and kayaks that day....
