If you take a small road trip about 3 hours north to Vancouver, B.C., and
check out Granville Island, you will find a small boatbuilding shop that
specializes in not only building, but teaching the art of building,
skin-on-frame craft. If they can't answer your questions, no-one can.

They have lots of different craft, from several different traditions:
baidarkas, East and West Greenland, and from points in betweeen, plus
canoes, rowboats, etc., built from yellow cedar and HEAVY nylon, coated with
Hypalon and other substances.

Great shop, very friendly.

And down the road about 1/4 mile, is Feathercraft, for a completely
different view of the art. About two blocks north of the shop is Ecomarine
Kayaks, originally owned by John Dowd, one of the pioneers of this sport,
and still a great place for kayak stuff, including rentals.

Somewhere in between is Alder Bay Boats, where one of the guys who shares
the space runs a course building a Cheasapeake Light Craft kayak, not to
mention other fascinating small traditional rowing, sailing and power boats
in wood. Also very friendly.

Worth the trip, I recommend it highly

Rob.
