Hi all, The following was posted to a club list in the NYC area by one of its members. I thought the rest of us might be interested in the concept. Usual disclaimer (not my site, I get nada, I never heard of the bum, er, fellow). =========================================================================== I want to let you know about an International Stolen and lost items register available on the Internet at http://www.ItsBeenStolen.com We currently have nearly 150 stolen Kayaks and Canoes listed. The service is free, all you need is access to the Internet. The idea is that you can list anything that is identifiable that has been lost or stolen, (so for example you can also list your lost or stolen camera gear as well). We want to let people who buy second hand goods know that they can first check to see if the item they want to buy is registered, and if it is, rather than buying stolen goods, let them advise the rightful owner of where they are. I am also in the process of contacting Paddlers and Paddler equipment shops to let them know they can register items and also search the database, but as only a small number are listed on the internet, if you could also advise your club and local shops we should be able to cover the whole country which would then make it extremely difficult for people to sell stolen gear. I hope that you will find this information useful, and I thank you for your time. Perhaps I could ask you to forward this mail to as many of your friends as possible that way you can help to spread the word about http://itsbeenstolen.com and help to eliminate the theft of our equipment, or perhaps if you run a website you could add a link to http://ItsBeenStolen.com . Best regards Richard Webster<<<<<<<<< A short time ago Richard Webster contacted me about adding the kayaks on my Stolen Kayak Database to his brand new ItsBeenStolen website. It seemed like a good idea to me to spread the stolen kayak list as widely as possible so I allowed him to post all the kayaks on my list on his site (without revealing any of the owners information--which may have been given to me in confidence). I hope this registry of stolen items idea catches on and encourage anyone who has had identifiable items stolen to list them on his website. It is free and he eventually hopes that advertisers will make the site self supporting. It looks like a good system. He e-mails victims every 3 month to see if anything is changed (to keep the site up to date and not be reporting recovered items). We will be trading stolen kayak information. On our website the data is in different form. I plan to pass along any kayak identifying information I get on stolen kayaks to the ItsBeenStolen site as well. I'm not sure if I will be able to get the information to flow the other way as yet so if you post a kayak there please be sure to also post it with me at the Stolen Kayaks section of our website. It's obviously a commercial site, but with good intentions. One flaw is his assumed premise that the viewer is interested in only one boat. Of those 150, I see only the first thirty, no more.... *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
