dear pw folks,

i have a lightning 2-piece paddle. i love it. however, it's getting
harder to put it together and take it apart. what's the deal.... carbon
fiber doesn't rust, does it? the problem doesn't seem to be with the
ferrule (that's the button, right?)... i wonder, would 3-in-1 oil be a
good idea to put on there sparingly? if you dunk the shaft ends in the
water first before you put it together easier---that's my husband's
technique with my paddle-----but i'm not sure that's good for it.

thanks in advance for any advice,

kcd

Hi Kathleen,
No, carbon fiber does not rust and the button is called, . well . .,
"the button". The dunking in the water can lead to a build up of organic
material or worse introduce sand, worsening the problem. In general the
ferrule (the parts that fit inside each other) can sometimes get dirty with
various oils and organic materials. This can make the assembly / disassembly
of the paddle quite difficult. The best method I have found is to clean both
the male and female parts of the ferrule and lubricate with *pure* silicone
spray. *Do not use oil* Oil will become contaminated with dirt and will gum
up. Also make sure that no dirt and sand is present on the ferrule surfaces.
I have maintained my paddles this way for several years and have never had a
problem.

Good luck,
Jed

So do I.

As someone else mentioned, the ferrule is made of the the two
connecting pieces. Ferrules are also commonly found on fishing
rods. They are often made of metal (brass in the case of my
bamboo fly rods) and consist of two pieces that fit onto each
piece of the fishing rod that fit into each other. The Lightning
Ferrule is similar to a fiberglass/graphite ferrule common on higher
quality rods. I've built a couple for a couple of flyrods I built.

In any case, fishing rod ferrules suffer the same problems as paddle
ferrules. A similar technique used for fishing rods could be applied
with your paddle. Put the paddle behind your legs, squat slightly,
push the button, and twist slightly while pulling out sideways.

Oil attracts sand. My Werner Camano paddle used to get stuck together. I tried rubbing the fitting surfaces with a kitchen scrubber made for non-stick surfaces (Werner recommendation). It worked a little, but not much. So I very carefully tried some fine grain sandpaper and that did the trick.

Unfortunately the first time it got stuck when it was brand new, I cracked the female end as I was wiggling it loose. Thankfully the crack hasn't had any effect on the paddle and it still fastens securely. I should have demanded a new female section from Werner. They acknowledged a defect in their manufacturing process that caused the pieces to join too snugly.
