hi folks,

i appreciate the helpful ideas and responses to my self-righting devices post.

let me clarify that i'm not roll-obsessed. what i want is SAFETY.

> All this, however, places even a greater onus on owners of boats
> like mine
>to religiously practice self rescue techniques other than rolling.

i couldn't agree more with this post from "the end of the world". that's
what i am about, self-rescue, skill, safety. i don't care how i do it. i
care if it's consistently reliable.

it's also incumbent upon me and others like me to kayak in conditions that
are favourable for us, our skill level, our type of boat. of course this
is patently obvious but still it has to be at the forefront of my priorities.

> if you don't roll, you
>aren't really a seakayaker.

this mindset isn't exclusive to australia. but again i don't care about
it. i admire the rollers and all the types of rolls. i AM wedged well in
my cockpit , but i know any beamy long-cockpit boat (let alone in that
pesky bendy tupperware) is hard to roll. so, i just want to save
myself. if a roll happens for me one day, coolio.

lots of great posts and thoughts here. thanks for sharing it all. great
list, great people.

jackie, after seeing the havoc wreaked on the sp*ns*n-mania list, oops, i
mean rec.boats.paddle, i want to join the chorus of thanks to you for the
work you do moderating this list.
