From: Jackie Fenton <<< For those not aware of what Ashton is referring to, a 7.0 earthquake has been reported in the Pacific Northwest. for more details, see: http://www.foxnews.com/national/022801/seattle_quake.sml Hey, Doug. Were you on the water at the time? Tsunami warning has been canceled (according to Fox news... I didn't even know there had been a tsunami warning issued). <<< My work building in Victoria shook a fair bit. I'm one of the Urban Search and Rescue volunteers, so was prepared from that perspective (we just finished training in an old building complete with simulated sound, shaking, triage stations, smoke, etc). But the first thought that came out of my mouth was, "Dang, wish I was out on the water, bet there's a good tsunami coming in." As it turned out, it wasn't an off-shore plate movement. Though I celebrated my birthday after the Sunday surf course re my last post, my real birthday was today. I had told my mother-in-law on Sunday that a tsunami was my birthday wish (Langara Island almost had one a week ago, so it was on my mind). When I started fantasizing about the tsunami possibility today, I again realized my outstanding need for a good surf kayak (for normal surfing :-) ). To make a long story short (sort of), it was the last evening tonight of one of the woodworking courses I teach as a second job. The students offered to take me out for a beer, and one of the older gentleman, gave me a signed copy of his new book about to go into circulation on his memoirs of fighting in W.W.II. A very sweet old gentleman. Then, one of the younger students who overheard me discussing the surf course earlier, said he had a slightly used Necky Gliss 7-11 plastic WW kayak that he would like to give to me, as an appreciation for doing a fine job teaching. It sounded too good to be true. He went home, picked up the kayak, and met us back at the neighborhood pub. The Gliss is missing all its hardware and foam. It was some kind of factory reject he got from a paddlesport store as a favor. Its the perfect boat for me, as I hate the thigh bracing on WW kayaks. I can now outfit the kayak the way I want to, totally custom. I can fix anything. I now have a new WW/surf kayak in my stable. I traded him some sanding equipment, as a bit more of a fair exchange. So, that's what was shaking on my B-day. It was the big one for me. PS Loved Rev. Bob's report.
