The system is quite secure (I have used it in surf many times) and if the paddle were to come loose it would be very evident to the paddler that it was happening. The paddle halves are easy to access by feel while sitting in the cockpit. it can hold the paddle on the sides of a deck gear load as well using small hooks to hold the diagonals together over the deck load.
