Sometimes everything is worse... Peter Treby says: > Always good to have another option practised and familiar. Yes, never forget this point. If you only got one self rescuing this have to work or you are in real trouble! Now, about 2,5 years ago a bad accident happens in germany. A middle/older aged paddler gone out by 4 Bft and in a relativiliy flatwater area. As I know, he wants to test a racing paddle for the first time. He only couldnīt do the roll and was only able to re-enter by paddle-float and in calm conditions. Nobody knows what happend, but fact is a few hours later a fast passenger ship/ferry passes his course and a passenger see him swimming next to his kayak and waving his arms. Obviously an alert! The Passenger moves quick to the captn. and he advises a shipmember to have a sight out. But he couldnīt see anything. No wonder, it was a fast ship and the captn. doesnīt slow down or turn the ship. so, the captn. decides that there wasnīt a person in trouble and moves on. Nothing happend, no call of possible sighting of an helpless person ... In the evening the paddler was missing and next day they found dead by hypothermia. The Passenger hear that and started a report at the police. the captn. was accused and times goes on.... Nobody knows what really had happend, but in my opinion the man wasnīt fit enough (technically) to do a solo-tour under such conditions. Next negative point, he got signal flares, but left them at home !! If you only got a single technique for self rescuing, this might be not enough. The capnt, wasnīt sentenced but has to pay a big amount of money and maybe he will loose his job... We are responsible for our lifes, donīt believe that only could happen to the others... all the best Jochen *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
