A friend of mine just got hooked on sea kayaking. He drives a Honda
Goldwing motorcyle with a sidecar, so I am trying to find the perfect boat
for him. Most of his paddling will be mixed touring, in lakes and rivers
with the odd trip to the coast where he may be out for a few days.

My suggestion was for him to pick up a Feathercraft K1 Expedition or
something along those lines. His preference is also to pick up a second hand
boat.

My questions are this:

Anybody have any recommendations on models of folding kayaks ?
Anybody have any suggestions for suppliers for used folding kayaks ?
:)

Hi Jim,

You might have your friend consider the Feathercraft Kahuna as it is lighter
than the K1, would fit better in the sidecar, and it is a versatile all
around touring kayak. www.foldingkayak.com lists used Feathercraft kayaks,
both from our rental fleet and as classified ads.

Probably the best boat would be the Feathecraft Kahuna as it is very close
to the K-1 in performance but costs about half as much and is about 17
pounds lighter. Matt Broze made a comment that he thought that the Kahuna
was of a level of performance etc. that it would be cutting into the market
for the K-1. I would tend to agree.

As for used Kahunas...the model has been out just 4 months. So none around
yet. Another possibility is the K-Light. There are plenty on the use
market and because of the Kahuna the used K-Light market prices have
probably softened a bit. The used prices on K-Lights at one time were quite
high, often with just a few hundred dollar difference between a 2 or 3 year
old K-Light and a brand new one.

BTW, my mentioning these crafts rather than others is based on a key
factor...size of the bag. Most of the other folding singles tend to be in
larger bags or even two bags. The Feathercraft bags are the best in the
business in compactness and portability.

best,

Jim,

The easiest solution for transport of a kayak with any of the later and
stronger Goldwings would be one of the smaller/lighter motorcycle cargo
tailers already available which can be modified with a rack to hold the yak
and with a slightly longer towbar or added extension to accomodate the yak's
length.

At least one German paddler I know is using an ordinary Pouch double folding
kayak (long bag and short bag) when travelling with his wive and a
motorcycle (with sidecar). The cult factor is incredibly high and from what
I've heard, it is functional as well.

If he should ever get to Germany, there are hugh piles of used folding
kayaks. Check www.faltboot.de/dt/kleinanzeigen.html for an impression
(German, but you'll get the message).

Cheers,

... otherwise Ralph would undoubtedly have mentioned the Pouch E68, being a
full sized single ...

Sorry, Ralph (and anyone else who does not see the humor!), I could NOT
resist this blatantly self-promoting commercial posting!!
