My Mother was chatting to the fellow who was in the kayaking group that
got attacked by the GW a few weeks ago. THe fellow said the shark came
straight up from below hitting the kayak from underneath sending it
about 1.5 metres into the air. The kayak was flipped over and the
occupant had to do a wet exit. He said this was the most scary part,
being in the water with the shark (estimated at 5 metres) still around.
Although the kayak was damaged it was as great as they would have
expected. They believe the shark hit the boat with its snout rather than
biting it. THe other paddlers came over and helped him back in the boat.
Up until the time of the attack they had seen no sign of a shark.

Someone once told me (but I don't know if this is true or not) that its
the sharks you don't see that are the worry.

My mother is still paddling at 71 so I hope I have plenty of paddling
years left. She didn't take it up until near 60. Its great at Christmas
time as she knows what gear to buy me for a present

Cheers

Now that is something that I like to hear. Good for Mom! How come she's
not on PW?

Do you share gear?

Joan

Yes we share gear and she has a quite a few kayaks at her place. My
mother is what we refer to her as a Grey Nomad - someone who is retired
and goes travelling around. She has trouble getting her kayak on top of
her kombi but she has a small plastic one which she can slide in the
back between the two front seats. She dosn't go in the open sea but does
lake and river trips.

Her House backs straight onto a lake (Where I grew up). So I get plenty
of paddling in when I visit. It was great when my kids were small as I
got them into kayaking (though they haven't taken it up) at an early
age.

As for paddlewise, She is not interested in the internet - too busy

Cheers
David
