I've had mine on for 2 years and it hasn't even cracked. There just isn't
that much pressure on it. Even if it did break I have it on a rather wide "C"
style clamp that would keep the loop from pulling out of my hand. The thing
for me it that the color keeps me aware and I can feel the ball, even if I
can't feel the loop. I will speak from the experience of needing to find it
in 40-something water one day. It is a bit like a security blanket. If you
practice with it and do it over and over the feel if the familiar ball,
whatever, in you hand will steady you in what might be a sticky situation. It
worked for me, or the practice did, at any rate.
    What I really want is something big enough to feel through the heavy
gloves. The loop is too insubstantial to feel but a 'biner, which a lot of
folks use, has a weight and feel, even in the water.
    Awareness of the potential and practice for the eventuality is 99% of the
solution as far as I can tell.

   I attach a plastic champange cork to each of my sprayskirts. It makes a
nice item to grab in order to remove the skirt, I've never had one fail, and
I enjoy the humor of it :-)

I have a small "Koosh" - it's a toy that kids like to toss back & forth;
it's small and rubbery, looks sort of like an anemone, I guess.
Definitely not going to break, and easy to find and grab hold of.
