We just got this over on NYCkayaker. The info I have is cryptic but it
seems that rules changes are pending that would allow a health insurance
company to deny coverage and payment to someone who is injured while engaged
in a recreational activity.

I don't fully understand it and whether the people calling attention to it
(horse riders, bike riders) are being alarmists on this. But I hope some
one more knowledge will look into this and report back. The proposal is at

http://www.dol.gov/dol/pwba/public/regs/fedreg/final/2001000106.htm

and the bill is HCFA-2022-IFC

Another commentary is at
http://www.atvsource.com/articles/press_releases/010801_insurance_discrimina
tion.htm

What is being said that the rules could affect any recreational activity,
albeit kayaking isn't be cited by name.

Again, I know nothing about this and hope that one of our eager beavers on
PaddleWise will weigh in on whether we should be alarmed or not.
