Water is extremely silty so bring a filter cloth and Alum (aluminum sulfate)
helps the silt to settle. You will be clogging your filter a lot without
out some preliminary purification or letting it settle overnight (but even
settling often won't do it completely). Also when we did the grand Canyon
in 94 half the party got sick from a waterborn virus. You might consider
chemical purification in addition to filtering. That trip convinced me and
the Park Service said many other folks got sick on the river that summer and
everyone was using filters.

One consideration on the Green is the afternoon wind, so plan to put on
early and take off early. Spectacular scenery, I used to live in Moab.
Should be a fabulous trip in June, thats when I do the Grand Canyon
again. -- mZ

Subject: [Paddlewise] Info on Green River Paddle

I'm thinking of doing the 120 mile paddle down the Green River in Utah
from the town Green River through Labyrinth and Stillwater Canyons to
Spanish Bottom on the Colorado River in Canyonlands National Park. Can't
make May, but am shooting for first 2 weeks in June when it will be a
litttle hotter, higher water, and faster river flow than in Sep/Oct.
Anyone kayaked this trip and have any words of wisdom? Don't know if I
will have room to bring my 10 gal of water for the 10 day trip...shuttle
service says purifier O.K. if it is cleanable so it won't get inundated
with the silt. Also have to carry a 11"x11"x7" litter box. No roads or
takeouts once the trip is started so there is no turning back. Any
experience out there regarding this trip? Thanks....Ken
