[Paddlewise] Doubles

I was wondering if anyone has any experience of double kayaks and techniques
for handling heavy conditions and surf.
I don't paddle a double, but I am trawling for information after a recent
trip in which a double capsized in surf. So...
Can you effect a quick self-rescue after a capsize in surf? How?
Are techniques for breaking out or landing through surf any different than
for a single?
How do you handle a fully loaded double with just two paddlers?
How do you handle a swamped double with just the crew?
Is the extra speed of a double worth the extra trouble in rough conditions?
What are the best arrangements for pumping out? I tend to think linking
both cockpits by a tube, and having two independent electric pumps would be
good.
Any advice and comments welcome.
