If you want a camera with both close-up and zoom capabilities I would recommend a Pentax WR 105. I have used a WR 105 for several years and have been pretty pleased with it. It has both a panoramic setting and everthing inbetween to 105 mm (zoom)- a real plus in trying to photograph elusive sea live etc. My only complaint is that it has an averaging light meter which averages the whole field for exposure. This results in a lot of underexposed pictures when shooting from the water with a bright sunlit sky to a darkened shore line. It has survived a few minor dunkings with no problem.
