Although this is a little off topic I offer it as a break from the intensive paddle theory. There was an interesting article in one of our papers a few months ago about shark attacks. A scientist had discovered a correlation between weeing in wetsuits and shark attacks. Apparently, according to the scientist, the combination of urine and Neoprene is a bit of a turn on for sharks. I think, if I remember correctly, they had interview as many shark attack victims as they could, nearly all surfers, and found that they had weed in their wetsuit just before they were attacked. I am sure there is a lesson there somewhere Cheers David Australia -----Original Message----- From: Bob Denton [mailto:gulfstream_at_flinet.com] Sent: Friday, 18 May 2001 12:17 PM To: 'Christian'; PaddleWise_at_paddlewise.net Subject: RE: [Paddlewise] Wetsuit sizing help needed for Newbie We say there are two kinds of divers..those that pee in their wet suits and those that lie about it! I suspect that is a natural reaction to a 4000 lb fish racing towards one.... First I thought "weed" was a typo, but then when I considered most surfers I know maybe not. > if I remember correctly, they had interview as many shark > attack victims as they could, nearly all surfers, and found > that they had weed in their wetsuit just before they were attacked. > *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s). My interpretation of it has been that "weed" refers to having gone wee in the wetsuit...is in peed in the wetsuit, making it more attractive to sharks. I don't think there is any evidence sharks are attracted to weed as in marijuana. There have been a number of large packages of mmarijuana washing up on our local beaches the last week or so. At the same time, there have been a greater than usual number of shark sightings and attacks.... coincidence? I don't think so.... *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s). Again, this is not my expertise, but why do you not think this is a coincidence...it may not be, but why should sharks be attracted to it...? They may be.. What part of the country are you in? There is a biologist in Gainsville (I think)...who has special expertise in shark repellants and possibly attractants...if I can locate her i will see if she something to add to this thought...and get back to the list.
