The Werner Arctic Wind, one of my two favorite paddles, comes close to
this description. Wish I had another. (Anyone seen one for sale?) Werner
made an all-carbon version, too, of which I've only seen one, paddled by
a fellow out on Argo Pond in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Curiously, he used it
feathered!

A true Greenland style paddle with a foam core and composite skin would
be a pretty neat toy. Super light and super buoyant- a great rolling
tool. I have a friend who does composite structures for industrial
applications; I wonder what it would take to bribe him into this
project...?

WRONG
check out http://www.superiorkayaks.com/superiorkayaks006.htm
Composite Paddles
Digitally reproduced from our computer carved wood paddles, these composite
paddles provide you with another medium for this great design. Foam cored
for flotation, you will be amazed at the strength, warmth and feel of these
beautiful black paddles.
Fiberglass paddles are 90% glass and 10% carbon, with a striking satin
black finish.

I was wondering when somebody would make one commercially. I was
discussing just this topic last summer on a trip with a fellow
Paddlewiser, and the first time I paddled with him this year, he showed up
with a home-built greenland paddle that had a balsa core and carbon/glass
layed over it. He even put on kevlar tips, for abrasion resistance. It
weighed next to nothing compared to my pine/aspen greenland paddle.

Another idea for a project........

Mark Rogers from Superior Kayaks is working on a f/g and carbon, foam core,
Greenland stik. He was *suppose* to get me a finished paddle a while back.
I will re-establish contact and see what's up. I have been using his wooden
paddle for about 5 years and love it.

Take a look at:
http://www.seakayakitaly.com/en/pics/pics.htm

This is an italiant seakayking company, and they use something
quiete like a composite greenlander.

At :
http://www.nswseakayaker.asn.au/mag/30/paddle.html
You find instructions for building a composite 28 oz. greenlander-
lookalike.

I've paddled with SKI, and used that paddle, and it's neither super light
nor super buoyant.Disappointly heavy in fact. I pawned it off on the
beginner in our group who didn't know any better and used one of the
wooden Greenland paddles they provided, which are carved by a guy on Elba.

I agree, though that a carbon/Kevlar version might be highly neat.

They're advertising wood, 'glass and carbon paddles:

The balsa-cored greenland paddle builder Wayne Smith referred to is me. A
laminated balsa core was carved to shape then layed up with: a. 1" wide
unidirectional carbon fiber tape front and back, b. three layers of 3 oz
cloth on shaft, two on the shoulders of the blade, and one at the tips, c.
kevlar on tips for abrasion resistance. I used 24 hr epoxy laminating resin
and vacuum bagged the layers on one at a time. Length 7 feet. Weight 22
oz.

I experimented with spyder foam (a crush-resistant styrene foam) as a core
material but quickly gave up as it was too floppy to shape easily.

The paddle has held up to some fairly agressive paddling, though I haven't
used it as a brace for entering and exiting the cockpit. I think it is
probably strong enough for that, but .....

My only complaint is that the carbon makes the paddle quite stiff with a
very quick flex (like a graphite fishing rod) rather than the softer feel,
and slower flex of wood.
