While I was in Oregon, a couple things came up off Vancouver Island. First incident occurred off Ladysmith last week during a sudden squall (we are still getting some good spring squalls with the passing of each cold front). There were a group of three or four newer paddlers together when it hit. One fellow went over and was in the water some time, due to the fact that every time the cockpit was emptied, it would re-flood due to wind waves. The paddler made it back eventually, and was kept in hospital overnight for observation. The male paddler realized he needed more rescue practice, and signed up with a local paddleshop foe a course. he was wearing a wetsuit at the time, which doesn't explain the hypothermia. In another incident, a paddler off the coast of the island hurt himself while landing (shoulder injury), and wrote "HELP" in the sand. He was spotted eventually and picked up for medical care. I didn't get any other details. In the news today, Hyoichi Kohno is still missing in the Canadian arctic. He was still a few years away from Stage Three of his trip which would involve crossing the Bearing Sea to rRssia by kayak and then paddling down to his home country of Japan. He was not paddling on the stage of the trip where he went missing.
