The modern European style, as has been pointed out, was originally designed for touring fast moving rivers and was further developed for racing, where the emphasis is on power. It's an efficient style, but it can be very stressful to the wrists, particularly if you don't have well-developed technique. I notice a number of people switching to Greenland style paddles and paddling for this reason. It's much more comfortable for long hauls, as you can relax your arms and do the work with your torso. Of course, if you're already comfortable with the European style there's no need to switch. -- mike --------------------------------------------------------------- Michael Edelman mje_at_spamcop.net http://www.foldingkayaks.org (nomadics) http://www.findascope.com (choosing a telescope) *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s). As a carpal tunnel sufferer and avid paddler, I've tried conventional (e.g. Werner Camano), modified Greenland (more oval blade) and crank-shaft (AT Exception). I would rate the crank best for minimizing wrist pain, while still getting the higher level of power I want. I do enjoy the feel of wood when I'm just looking for a gentle cruise.
