Depending on the high build primer you used, it could make it less durable.
The stuff I used (Z-Spar) is thick but soft.  I'm finishing a Chesapeake 18
and I used the primer on the sides but not the bottom for that reason.   I
used it on the sides because I care more about their appearance and it is
less likely to hit the rock than the bottom.

The argument about varnish versus paint for the bottom seems to have raged
for some time.  I decided to paint because when I put a ding in it. I can
use body filler and then paint over it fairly easy.  Fixing dings in bright
is difficult.  As I mentioned, there still seems to be a lot of people who
argue each side.
