When I asked the attendant about his presence adding to the cost of gas, he said someone had to be at the station anyway and if he wasn't pumping gas he would still be there but just reading a book--that's when he dropped into the explosion theory. Other attendants I talked to just said that's the way it's always been; they were freaked out when they traveled to other states; one attendant said he pulled up to a pump in California and just stood there for the longest time waiting for someone to pump his gas...
