The coastline is breath-taking. But here's my question to the Oregonian Paddlewisers: why doesn't your state government trust you and visitors to your beautiful state to pump their own gas! It freaked me out the first time I stopped for gas in Oregon and the attendant notified me that I couldn't pump my own gas. All I could wonder is what else doesn't the state of Oregon trust their citizens with? The whole situation with me standing next to the attendant watching him pump gas into my car struck me as absurd. I can pump my own gas in just about every other state in the union--but not in Oregon! Doesn't the fact that every station has to hire an attendant to pump gas add to the cost? One attendant mentioned some smoker blowing themselves sky high or torching themselves and the ensuing lawsuit--seemed like an incredible over-reaction by the state government to me.
