I believe that it was a courtesy inspection. If you go through a courtesy inspection and pass you get a sticker to display. When the Coast Guard or their aux. see the sticker they are a lot less likely to look closer. They already know you play by the rules so they don't need to watch you like they do others. (This knowledge is one of the few advantages of being a former power boater.)
