Everglades City is one of two prime embarkation points for paddling the 10,000 Islands area of South Florida. Flamingo is the other and the Everglades Water Trail connects the two. This time of year the mosquitoes are starting to be a problem and you'll also get deer flies in Flamingo and possibly Everglades City. You can safely leave your car at the ranger station in Everglades City and there are B&Bs there as well as camp sites for staging. It's a fair carry, from the parking lot to the put in so bring wheels or a friend. If you want, I can e-mail you the Park Service map of the area showing the various Chickees. This time of year it's not necessary to reserve a spot. Just leave your itinerary in a drop box in the ranger station. The platforms referred to are Chickees, which are built in areas where a dry campsite is not practical. I usually camp on the keys which are less buggy.
