Just finished reading "A Kite-Sailing Mishap" by Doug Lloyd in SK. I know I've seen that name somewhere, but I just can't place it... Anyway, while I'm trying to place the name: What struck me in this article is that a kayaker of ten years experience reportedly: "told friends on a number of occasions that he didn't want to learn any self-rescue techniques, including the roll recovery, because if he did, he would then need to use them one day." who then apparently proceeded to solo sail with a kite that "was relatively new to him" into a situation that might require, and apparently did require, those same self-rescue techniques. Does anyone practice or support the "not learning self-rescue skills leads to a cautious approach to kayaking" pseudo-safety rationale? Mr. Szyleyko could not be the only one with this mentality, could he?
