Re: the fishing rod holder. After a botched attempt at making a seat more
comfortable than lousy one in my Arctic Hawk I had some pieces of foam left
over, say 18" by 4" by however thick they are. I cut some grooves for the
deck bungies to go in and attached two rod holders. The first is a cheap two
piece plastic thing consisting of a loop that the butt end goes into and a
"D" shaped half loop closed with flexible rubber that the tip goes in. The
butt end goes under the deck bungies, the tip end goes under the bungie up on
the front. Holds the rod out horizontal and is used when moving from spot to
spot. Then I added one of those plastic tilt up adjustible rod holders to
hold the rod up at an angle while drifting or when unhooking a fish, etc. I
then mount a mostly inflated paddle float on a small canoe paddle that
doubles as a spare paddle, stick it under a bungie in the front, and use it
as an outrigger. Works for me, but I am still refining it, particularly the
way of stowing it as I move to another spot. If I ever develop a decent hip
snap I should be able to roll with it, no? By the way, the short rods you
see advertised are useless, IMO. I cannot cast with anything less than a 7'
rod while sitting on my fanny. Even with a six footer, I tend to send the
bucktail into the water about 10 feet from the boat. Casting with a short
rod is a little easier with a spinning reel, but they do not fish as well as
conventionals ( a flame war topic fully as divisive as rudder/skeg, etc!).
Also: avoid lures with multiple hooks. After wearing a Zara Spook for an
uncomfortable period of time, I stick to bucktails.
