Yes, "swimming" with your paddle can be fast, thanks for testing it out for
us! It also seems awkward. I wonder how it works for short people using long
sea kayak paddles? (I'm 6'2 with long arms so I wouldn't know :)

You can also use a paddle as a bodysurfing aid when swimming to shore in the
surf. But this only works with an unfeathered paddle. I have heard it can be
quite effective for catching waves, though I haven't had the opportunity to
test it out.

    I discovered the benefits of swimming with your paddle in the reservoir
near me.  It seems like you can get to shore about twice as fast.  Keep in
mind the water was dead calm. I have no idea if this would help in surf or
other rough conditions.
