Does anyone have any word on, from or about Ralph Diaz?

I am okay as are all the paddlers whom I know.

As fate would have it this morning, I headed north to the George
Washington Bridge with NYC Parks Dept staff to check out the staging area
at the Little Red Lighthouse for the swim from there to 22nd St this coming
Saturday, a 7.8 miler and last of the series of swims that kayakers escort.

When we arrived and wandered out on the rocks slopping down to the river we
could see smoke billowing from one of the WTC towers. Then we saw the huge
red fireball shoot out from one of the towers as the second plane hit. It
was surreal. Here we were under a bright sky next to the tiny lighthouse of
children book fame, in a serene setting of a flowing river and the timeless
Palisades across the Hudson catching the morning sun. A million miles away
in essence and time from lower Manhattan it would seem. Yet a real 11
miles to our south a terrible disaster was unfolding as if on a distant
stage. The contrast was uncanny.

The Downtown Boathouse is about a half mile from the scene of the tragedy.

Some TV footage looking southward was from practically in front of it.

Good to hear that you are all right. I knew the boathouse was close to the
WTC, and was under the impression that you lived close to it.

Hang in there. Our prayers are with you New Yorkers, especially, and all
the others touched by this tragedy.
